Advocates: Need for Medical Marijuana is Urgent in Md.

CBS DC

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Medical marijuana advocates say epileptic children who would benefit from the drug are dying for lack of access to it. They say lawmakers need to make it available in Maryland urgently.

The House Health and Government Operations Committee heard testimony Friday from Dels. Cheryl Glenn and Dan Morhaim, who are sponsoring bills to set up marijuana treatment centers.

Several parents also testified about how marijuana could ease their children’s seizures and suffering. Cheryl Meyer of Baltimore said her epileptic 2-year-old son who died last year likely could have been saved by a medical marijuana strain available in Colorado.

Glenn and Morhaim’s bills would allow five marijuana growers to sell the drug through satellite offices, and patients would need physicians’ notes to buy it.
