Cannabis, commonly referred to as Marijuana has been used as medicine for a large variety of illnesses and ailments for over 5000 years.
Despite its well documented history as a medicine there are many common misconceptions about Cannabis which result in the general public having mixed feelings about its use as medicine. One of these misconceptions is that using Cannabis for medical purposes will result in the creation of “addicts” in our society.
It is important to first have an understanding of what the terms “addiction” and “phsyical depedence” mean.
The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) defines addiction as: “A primary, chronic, neurobiologic disease with genetic, psychosocial and environmental factors that influence its development and manifestations. It is characterized by behaviours that include one or more of the following: loss of control over drug use, continued use despite harm, compulsive use and craving.”
